What is psychological preparation for performers?

Psychological preparation for performers is very similar to mental preparation for top athletes. The quality of a public performance does not depend solely on intense musical and technical preparation. Mental and emotional factors such as self-assurance, confidence in one's preparation, concentration and the constructive use of stress have a huge impact on the excellence of a performance. Mental training helps the performer to systematically obtain the ideal emotional state required to perform well in public.

Is public performance the main goal of psychological preparation?

Psychological preparation has other goals too, such as:
• developing self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as confidence in one's artistic value
• promoting emotional fluency, creativity, awareness, freedom and body expression
• improving study and memorisation methods
• addressing the instrumental technique in relation to the mental and emotional factors

It also motivates and inspires performers to continuously develop the pleasure of music performance and the wish to share it.

To which performers is it aimed?

To all performers who, regardless of their level, would like to improve themselves in a certain technical, musical or professional aspect.

What does a mental preparation session consist of?

Mental preparation consists of teamwork between the performer and the coach. The coach's role is to accompany, guide and support the performer. The coach helps the performer to set and reach clear objectives through a specifically designed program. This program includes thinking and reconsidering several issues, activity planning and learning the most proper techniques.

What are the foundations of these techniques?

These techniques are based on scientific research. They have been effective in research conducted witn thousands of performers. The field of psychology of performance provides tools that have been scientifically proven. These tools facilitate and optimize the professional activity.

What is the psychology of performance?

A new area in the field of scientific research that has emerged in the last decades: The psychology of music. This new science, which gathers thousands of specialists in psychology, cognitive sciences, education and music, studies the psychological processes involved in music production and reception. Within this field, psychology of interpretation specializes in the study of the physical and mental mechanisms, both conscious and unconscious, that have a role in musical performance.
Its scope is very broad. It includes issues such as reading a piece of music, learning and memorizing, technical expression, instrumental technique and mental preparation for public performance.
The goal of this research area is to provide a better understanding of the processes involved in musical performance, and to propose methods that optimize both the result of the performance and the quality of the performer's experience. Furthermore, it studies the problems related to performance, assesses the different methods to overcome them, and suggest strategies that prove to be more effective.
Unfortunately, this research and its suggestions remain in the academic and scientific realm and are totally unknown to most musicians. On the one hand, there is a very rich knowledge base surrounding musical performance, while on the other, there are performers who do not have any help with the demanding task of solving their own problems. Thus, performers have to resort to home remedies or proposals that have not been proved to be effective.
Because of this, my goal is to make my knowledge in the field of psychology of musical performance available to musicians. I am sure that understanding the proper use of our physical, mental and emotional potential allows us to overcome obstacles and to reach much more significant artistic and professional horizons.

What is my goal?

My goal is to help performers reach the full development of their artistic, musical and professional potential, while maintaining the pleasure of making music. This includes helping them to find and express their own voice and the richness of their individuality while being able to reach to others through musical language.

What is my philosophy?

My philosophy id unconditional respect for each individual.
